Welcome to your sixth crochet lesson at Home of Yarns! This will be the final lesson in this series, teaching you the last two basic crochet stitches: the triple crochet and double triple crochet (a.k.a. double treble and triple treble in UK crochet terminology).
If you missed some of the previous basic crochet lessons, you can find the entire series here.
Step 1: Starting this lesson
If you still have your work from your fifth lesson, you can just continue with that. At the end of the row: chain 4 and turn your work. In case you want to start from scratch, chain 14.
Step 2: How to make a Triple Crochet (double treble in UK)
The triple crochet stitch (=tr) is very similar to a double crochet stitch, but taller.
Turn your work if you haven’t already, so that the your previous work or the starting chains are now facing to the left and your crochet hook is all the way on the right. Follow the steps in the photos below.
1 First, yarn over twice (so that is one extra time when compared to the double crochet stitch).
2 Skip 4 chain stitches (turning chains) and insert your hook from front to back in the fifth stitch from the hook.
3-4 Yarn over and pull a loop through the stitch. You now have 4 loops on your hook.
5-6 Yarn over and pull through 2 loops. As a result, 3 loops will remain on your hook.
7-8 Yarn over and pull through 2 loops again. Now, 2 loops remain on your hook.
9-10 Yarn over one last time and pull through the remaining 2 loops. You now have a triple crochet stitch! Continue making one triple crochet per stitch until you reach the end of the row.
Step 3: How to make a Double Triple Crochet (triple treble in UK)
The last stitch you will learn in this series of basic crochet lessons is the double triple crochet (=dtr). Start with 5 turning chains and turn your work. Or start from scratch and chain 15. Follow the steps in the photos below.
1 The first step is to yarn over three times.
2 Skip 5 chain stitches (turning chains) and insert your hook from front to back in the sixth stitch from the hook.
3-4 Yarn over and pull through the stitch. You now have 5 loops on your hook.
5-6 Yarn over and pull through 2 loops.
7-8 Yarn over and pull through 2 loops.
9-10 Yarn over and pull through 2 loops.
11-12 Yarn over and pull through the last 2 loops.
You now have a double triple crochet! Finish the rest of the row by making one double triple crochet per stitch.
You are well on your way!
Now that you are familiar with the basic crochet stitches, you can make almost any crochet pattern you can find. If you need any other special stitches or technical tricks, they are usually instructed in the pattern or you can look them up on the internet. You can also find a lot of tips and tricks to improve your technique here at Home of Yarns.
